WW2 Propaganda
WW2 was the next big war after World War 1 and was it worst by far. While hearing of war most people think of big guns, tanks, violence, soldiers, chaos, and bodies all over the place but what most people don’t know that the other half of the war was being fought on the other half of the world, otherwise the United States. Most people don’t realize that the American people did so much to contribute the fall of the Axis and the win of the Allies. Without propaganda who knows what the outcome of the war would had been. Propaganda was another factor that helped the war effort and did it sure work.
Propaganda first started to appear in the U.S during World War 1 when President Woodrow Wilson hired 2 journalists to enter world war on the side of Great Britain, and it worked. What did propaganda do? Well it practically was an advertisement made for the American people to open their eyes and help win the war while not physically being in it. Propaganda was what made the funding for World War 2 possible.
Money and helping hands was what the U.S needed at the home front. War bonds were essential for funding the war overseas. The United States spent more than $300 billion fighting The Axis, a total of $4 trillion today. A war bond was an investment for a person’s financial investment and their country’s future. Here as an example of how it benefited the war “You could purchase a $25 War Bond for $18.75. The government would take that money to help pay for tanks, planes, ships, uniforms, weapons, medicine, food, and everything else the military needed to fight and win. That’s the investment in your country. Ten years from the time you purchased your War Bond you could redeem it and get $25.” If you think about it might not sound like a big return which would be only $6.25 from since you purchased it but if you bought multiple than it could sure add up.
Not only did war bonds fund the supplies we needed but it also was a decent investment for the average Americans so it was a win, win situation. The government could not afford to put their entirety of their recourses into the war because then they would become virtually broke, so they asked the people for help and they stepped up. Celebrities even were promoting war bonds on posters, you could even buy War Stamps to paste into a war bond booklet. The government did a great job promoting the use of War Bonds through propaganda.
Rhetoric was just another tactic used to influence and persuade the American people. Most rhetoric was used to get to the emotional part of you. It’s a form of persuasion appealing to an individual’s emotion, rather than their rational mind. This method of propaganda was used to show how horrible the axis powers were. Many different posters showed graphic images making the enemy looking very bad, they read words saying “buy war bonds” under the picture and things like that to make your emotional side want to buy war bonds and it really did work.
Rhetoric was very similar to Propaganda in some ways. They both advertised the effort of helping by buying war bonds and helping out in factories but propaganda did these things in a much nicer and joyful fashion. Rhetoric promoted these things but in a much more personal emotional way. Propaganda did many things to not only help the way but also help the end of the horrible events that ere happening in Germany. For the first time ever Americans as a whole were helping not only our country but also the world.
